One benefit of choosing a career in nursing is the variety of roles and environments you can work in. Nurses can grow their knowledge and focus on the area they’re most passionate about. Below, we cover some of the most popular nursing specialties.
If you have an undergraduate degree in nursing and are looking to advance your career, earning your Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) is a fantastic option. Look for MSN programs that offer the advanced nursing role specialty you are interested in. Below are the most desirable specialties based on salary potential.
1. Nurse Anesthetist
Depending on the state, a certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA) is an advanced practice nurse who either works as an anesthesia specialist or works with a physician anesthesiologist. They administer anesthesia to patients undergoing surgical procedures.3
Their responsibilities include monitoring patients during procedures and educating on pain management. To become a CRNA, candidates must earn a doctorate and pass the NCE.3
2. Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM)
Certified nurse-midwives assist patients with pregnancy and delivery. They specialize in women’s reproductive care and childbirth and perform physical exams, educate new parents on infant care and provide postpartum care.5
3. Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP)

Psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners (PMHNPs) diagnose mental illness and prescribe medication for patients who suffer from mental health conditions such as depression and bipolar disorder.
They work primarily in hospitals and in-patient care facilities. PMHNP candidates must earn a master’s degree in nursing and may be required to fulfill state-specific requirements.
The University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences (USAHS) offers the PMHNP role specialty through its MSN and Post-Graduate Nursing Certificate programs.
4. Neonatal Nurse Practitioner
Neonatal nurse practitioners offer specialized care for sick and premature newborns. They work in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs), emergency rooms and delivery rooms.9
5. Nurse Executive
Nurse executives are natural leaders who serve as role models and support the mission and vision of their organization. They are responsible for designing, developing and directing processes for patient care delivery. The nurse executive role specialty prepares students for senior leadership roles in various disciplines, from manager and director to supervisor and chief nursing officer.
Nurse executives are critical thinkers and team leaders with graduate-level nursing degrees. They build relationships with staff, advance the nursing discipline, manage financial and economic operations and much more.
USAHS offers the Nurse Executive role specialty through the MSN, BSN-entry DNP and Post-Graduate Nursing Certificates programs.
6. Pain Management Nurse
Pain management nurses care for patients with chronic pain. They help patients ease and manage their pain by listening to their concerns and administering the appropriate medications.12
To become a pain management nurse, earn your associate or bachelor’s degree in nursing and become a Registered Nurse (RN). Pain management nurses usually work in hospitals, nursing homes and physicians’ offices.12
7. Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP)
Family nurse practitioners (FNPs) work with infants, children, adults and families to treat acute and chronic illnesses and promote preventative care. FNPs diagnose and treat conditions, prescribe medications and order tests.
An FNP is a nationally certified and state-licensed advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) with a graduate-level education. FNPs are expert clinical providers who teach others in the workplace setting.
USAHS offers an FNP role specialty through the MSN, BSN-entry DNP and Post-Graduate Nursing Certificates programs.
8. Orthopedic Nurse Practitioner
Orthopedic nurse practitioners care for patients with bone, joint and muscle challenges. They conduct consultations, prescribe treatment and work closely with a team of nurses and physicians to develop a patient care plan from injury to discharge. Orthopedic nurse practitioners work in clinics, hospitals and health centers.15
9. Legal Nurse Consultant

Legal nurse consultants are RNs who provide medical expertise in legal cases. They work with legal firms, insurance companies and other legal professionals to provide insights on healthcare topics. These cases include medical malpractice, personal injury and long-term care litigation. They examine patient records and carry out research to provide evidence in a case.17
10. Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP)
Pediatric nurses treat children’s special healthcare needs. They must have excellent communication skills to relate to children and educate family members on their child’s care.19
To become a pediatric nurse practitioner, earn an MSN or DNP, complete specialized pediatrics courses in, and be recognized as an advanced practice nurse (APN) by your state board of nursing.
11. Clinical Nurse Specialist
Clinical nurse specialists are master’s or doctoral-level nurses who can be certified in various clinical specialties.22 They are different from most nurse practitioners, as they focus not only on clinical practice but also on education, research and consulting.21
CNSs are considered leaders in the field of nursing. They educate and mentor other nurses and assist in improving patient care practices. To work in research, they need a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP).

Nurse informaticists work with emerging technology to support patients and hospitals. They oversee healthcare technology systems and the use of patient data. They typically work in hospitals and other health facilities but can also work in IT companies and schools.30
15. Nurse Researcher
To become a nurse researcher, you must have a research-focused master’s or doctoral degree. The nurse researcher analyzes data and designs studies to improve the field of nursing.33
They are scientists who study health, illness and healthcare and look for ways to improve healthcare services and outcomes. They conduct studies with the ultimate goal of improving the quality of life for patients, advancing healthcare services and ensuring patient safety.
16. Case Management Nurse
A case management nurse, or long-term care nurse, works with patients who need ongoing medical treatment. They oversee long-term care plans and often develop close working relationships with their patients.35

Travel nurses are a critical part of the healthcare team. They bridge the gap between supply and demand and bring different educational backgrounds and areas of expertise to hospitals across the country.
18. Clinical Nurse Leader

The clinical nurse leader credential is a newer role created by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN). To become a CNL, you must successfully complete a master’s program that meets AACN requirements and pass a national certification exam.
19. Dialysis Nurse
Dialysis nurses work in nephrology, and care for patients experiencing or at risk for kidney disease. These nurses monitor patients on dialysis treatments. They administer dialysis and medication, maintain patient reports and records and educate patients about their conditions and treatment protocols.42
Those who earn their MSN can become a certified nephrology nurse (CNN) through the Nephrology Nursing Certification Commission (NNCC).
20. Critical Care Nurse
Critical care nurses focus on patients with life-threatening issues.44 They provide hands-on care and work in intensive care and telemetry units.
A critical care nurse cleans patient wounds, tracks life support equipment, checks vital signs, diagnoses illnesses and injuries and cares for a patient’s body immediately after death.
21. Flight Nurse

22. Oncology Nurse

Obstetrics nurses are RNs who care for patients during pregnancy, labor and childbirth. Obstetrics nurses are vital throughout the birthing process.50
Obstetrics nurses have a broader scope of work, providing prenatal care, educating patients on how to maintain a healthy pregnancy and assisting during childbirth. Obstetrics nurses often work in hospitals, birthing centers and clinics.
24. Emergency Nurse

Most emergency nurses work in emergency rooms and urgent care clinics. However, they may serve on a search and rescue team or ambulance.53
25. Labor and Delivery Nurse
Like obstetrics nurses, labor and delivery nurses are RNs who work with pregnant patients during and after childbirth. They provide labor support, monitor vitals and labor progress, administer medication and provide postpartum care.56
Labor and delivery nurses require communication skills to relay essential information to the patient and their family on the labor process, especially in emergencies. They can work in hospitals and birthing centers.56

31. Cardiac Nurse
Cardiac nurses treat patients with heart-related conditions and diseases, such as heart failure and coronary artery disease. Cardiac nurses assess and monitor patients during recovery and provide medication as needed.69
They can work in a variety of healthcare settings, including ICUs, cardiac care units and hospital surgical units and rehabilitative centers.
