Off the coast of Costa Rica, Isla Tortuga is a beacon of natural beauty, nestled in the azure waters of the Pacific Ocean. A day excursion to Isla Tortuga from San Jose is a must-do experience for those who are daring and want to escape the rush of city life.
The trip leaves San Jose early in the morning, at 6 a.m. The bus’s occupants are treated to stunning vistas of Costa Rica’s countryside as the sun rises.
When we arrive in Puntarenas, we board a speedboat headed for Isla Tortuga, and the excitement grows. Sea life can be spotted, and expansive views of the coast can be seen while traveling across the glistening waters. When en route to Isla Tortuga, dolphins swimming in pods can be seen from all around the speedboat. Lucky visitors may be able to see cheeky monkeys frolicking in the lush landscape and playful dolphins dancing in the waves along the route. We watched them from afar on the speedboat and threw some bananas their way to give them a little treat. There were baby monkeys on the backs of the adult monkeys too!
A visitor’s first impression of Isla Tortuga is one of immaculate beaches, swaying palm trees, and glistening, marine-life-filled waters. With a wealth of activities to suit every taste, the island is a haven for adventure enthusiasts.
Scuba diving options are abundant for individuals who are eager to explore the undersea world. Explore below the surface to see a vivid kaleidoscope of tropical fish, coral reefs, and other amazing aquatic life.
Once we worked up an appetite, guests were served a delectable meal consisting of typical Costa Rican cuisine. A typical meal, or a “casada”, can consist of sweet plantains and savory black beans with a tasty chicken and rice dish called arroz con pollo.
Once your hunger has been satisfied, explore Isla Tortuga‘s sun-kissed beaches to unwind. There are many ways to take in the island’s natural beauty, from swinging in a hammock under a palm tree’s shade to wandering down the shore and gathering seashells. Remember to put on your sunscreen because the sun is super strong!
It’s time to painfully say goodbye to Isla Tortuga as the afternoon sun starts to set. As we return to the mainland by speedboat, the passengers share stories of their escapades from earlier in the day.
Even if the day is coming to an end, going to Isla Tortuga never really leaves you. A day excursion to Isla Tortuga is highly recommended for anyone looking for a little piece of paradise close to the city.
