Ciao Drexel! Welcome to my eighth blog post recounting my time in the beautiful city of Rome! Today I’m going to be talking about my traveling tips! Now, I know I already made a blog post talking about my study abroad travel tips, but today I’m going to be discussing weekend trips. It’s hard to know how to pack for the many weekend trips you’re bound to take to study abroad. Packing can be very stressful and the thought of under or over packing and forgetting something is always in the back of your mind.
- Look at the weather of the city you’re visiting
I made this mistake a couple of times. When I visited Germany in September I did not check the weather beforehand and I ended up camping in the cold and damp German woods with no coat. Because Italy was so hot in September, I assumed that everywhere would be. Rookie mistake! It’s super important to check the weather beforehand and make sure you pack accordingly. Check for rain always and make sure that you have appropriate footwear.

- Bring a weekend bag
Whether it’s a small duffel, a backpack or a carry-on suitcase you will need a bag to bring on weekend trips. That is, unless you want to pay extra to check a bag because most flights will not include one. A small bag can be easily taken on buses and trains as well. It would be great if your bag has extra compartments and is spacious so you can fit more 🙂

- Pack layers
Layers are your best friend for short weekend trips. You’re not going to be able to fit your whole closet in your weekend bag so it’s important to keep a versatile closet. Think of the activities you’re going to be doing every day and pack accordingly. Keep your pieces simple and able to be worn on multiple occasions.

- Use packing cubes
Packing cubes are the best way to pack the most in the least space. You can find sets on amazon for very inexpensive and you can reuse them for trips to come. I used them all throughout my time in Europe!

- Pack only 1 pair of shoes, two MAX
Shoes are something that take up a lot of space. You should make sure to only pack the pair of shoes you wear there, and maybe one more to reduce space. Avoid shoes that are bulky and heavy and make sure to take into account how much you will be walking in each place.
