Hi, folks! It was a crazy international students week with even more networking and free food than usual here at Drexel. And I’m back to give you something new and exciting about the city of Philadelphia. Today we have a pretty regular, but still important topic to talk about.
We all know that university life and activities can be exhausting and overwhelming. And if you are coming to the US from countries, where they don’t give you that many tasks and projects during the semester, here at Drexel you will feel tired undoubtedly at some point (at many points I would say). But thanks to advances in labor law and human rights we all have a right for a chill time during weekends nowadays. And you definitely should spend them with your friends doing some activities which Philly gives you.
First and foremost festivals! From my perspective, Philadelphia has a lot of them, even more than we have back home in Ukraine or Czech Republic. Here in Philly, people are trying to organize some gathering activities every weekends or even during weekdays. The one that we visited with my friends was the pumpkin fest at the very end of October. It was happening in an authentic farmers market in the heart of Philly’s Old Town. This cozy place was decorated for Halloween and crowded with kids wearing various scary and funny costumes. People around were selling some cute stuff for home, small snacks and of course pumpkins. Later we witnessed an open air circus with tones of excitements from all the kids around. The only thing for you to remember, folks, is that you better come there with at least one kid under 10, because we failed to pass this criterion to decorate our own pumpkin for free:(

Well, festivals can be a nice outdoor activity to attend with friends if you have some free time during the weekends. However, we all know that sometimes 5 working days of the week are not enough to accomplish everything that needs to be accomplished and thus we are pushed to study during Saturdays and Sundays from time to time (at Drexel you will have a lot of that, don’t worry🥲). And I don’t know how it works for you guys, but I can’t do all the stuff that needs to be done from the same place where I sleep and eat for a long time. And that is the moment when cafes are coming to help us. In many European cities you will find tones of cozy cafes and workspaces to grab a coffee and enjoy your business without being disturbed. Unfortunately, Philly is not that great in that and sometimes your only option is to desperately go to Starbucks:( However, if you want to experience better vibes and coffee(!), I have one place for you. In fact, I believe that this cafe is the best option around University City and on this side of Schuylkill River (I still can’t get used to this crazy name). The place is called Madis Coffee Roasters. It has all the features of nice coffee/snack place with nice prices. Just be ready to come here early in the morning because there are a lot of fans of this place and not that many seats inside.
