Lovel Lee, ’25, is a Graphic Design major studying at FIE London this Summer 2023.
London is a wonderful place to study abroad partly because you can visit so many other places from there. It’s easy to connect to places like Paris and Italy. Italy is just a few hours away by plane and it was where my friend and I decided to go before coming back to the States.
If you study abroad in London, one thing I recommend is doing a trip to Italy. It could be possible to do a 3-day trip if you coordinate your classes with your friends since some of the classes allow a 3-day weekend. However, Italy is worth going to even if it’s just for 2 days.
My friend and I decided to go to Positano and Capri for our visit. One thing I advise is to plan for the flight to be delayed by an hour. Our flight going to and back from Italy got delayed. Thankfully, the train company, Campania Express, seemed to be really lenient and allowed us to get on the next train to Sorrento when we explained to them our situation. Italy has trains and ferries that can take you where you need. For long trips like one from Naples to Sorrento, I would look into ferries or a train.
I would also advise one to be cautious of taxi drivers. The taxis going from the Naples airport can try to scam you. I would download the taxi app itTaxi or iTaxi to order a taxi. They charge you a dollar or two for being ordered this way but it seems to be a more legit way to get around. Always ask the price before getting in the car and also confirm again with the taxi driver the price before paying.
If possible, however, always try to take a bus and also plan to stay close to the airport on the last day. When my friend and I were returning back to the airport we took a bus to the airport and it cost us each just 5 euros. We could scan our credit cards directly on the bus so no tickets were required. It was efficient and easy.
There are also buses that take you around different cities. We took a bus from Sorrento to Positano and back. The tickets cost around 2.20 euros and are sold in tobacco shops or convenience stores. There are a couple of different types of tickets sold by the company, Sita. Taking the bus was so much cheaper than taking a ferry from Sorrento to Positano and it also took around the same time.
Using Google Maps got me everywhere I needed to go. Google Maps tells you which buses to take and also if they need a ticket it has the information there as well. However, sometimes it’s the locals or people around you who can be super helpful in getting around. I would scope out people to ask questions on how to get somewhere. In Capri, I found out that instead of taking a $28 taxi for a 10-minute drive, you can take a bus for a couple of bucks. There’s also a tram that just costs a couple of bucks that goes up and down from the Capri Port to the city of Capri.
Both of these I found out only because I talked to people. Information can truly help you save a lot of money! Studying abroad has taught me the importance of research and how helpful people can be. For those looking to study abroad, I would encourage you to test these tips out for yourself! You won’t regret it:)
