One of the most pressing questions I had before starting my study abroad experience revolved around what an average day’s schedule would look like. Once I arrived here, I was very quickly put into a comfortable routine that I have been able to follow ever since. Here is what the schedule of an average Tuesday looks like for me.
I wake up around 8 in the morning and get ready for the day. At 8:30, my host family has my breakfast laid out at the table next to me. An average breakfast for me includes a bowl of 5 different fruits (I have had papaya, mango, pineapple, grapes, oranges, strawberries, watermelon, and cantaloupe at some point), an egg, and a piece of toast. Then, I meet up with another girl from the program at a local park and we walk to the bus stop to go to classes.
At around 9:15, we catch the bus, pay the bus fare, and either chat or sit silently and look out of the window. We reach the central street of San Jose around 9:30. After getting off the bus, we walk the 15 minutes to the hospital, Hospital Clinica Biblica. This is where our morning classes are held. After talking to some of the other students, we all head to the classroom and wait for class to begin at 10.
Class ends around 12, so we then leave and find a place for lunch. I usually enjoy going to the local hospital food court, where I eat a Subway sandwich. Then we chat with our group before our Tuesday clinical rotation shadowing begins.
At around 1, we head upstairs to the fifth floor of the hospital and drop off our bags in a conference room. Then, we sit and chat until 1:25, when we head downstairs to the department that we are assigned to. We spend three hours in the department asking questions, following the doctors around, and sometimes getting the chance to directly speak to patients. After this, we pick up our bags and head out.
On our walk back to the bus stop, we sometimes buy ourselves a McDonalds cone as a treat. The ice cream flavors taste different here, which has been fun to try.
At around 5, I get off the bus and walk back to my host home. I sometimes talk to my host mom and grandma, sit with the dog, and watch the news on the tv. Then, I head to my room to relax and do some homework or talk to friends before dinner.
Dinner in my house is at 7, and changes based on the day. Rice and beans are very common in Costa Rican diets, so my dinner will usually have a side of rice and beans with my dinner. Then, I take a little chocolate from the sweets jar and do anything else that I need to do for the next day. Since it is a Tuesday night, I go to sleep fairly early as I have class at 8 in the morning on Wednesdays.
Throughout the week, my daily schedule changes depending on my classes, with this being a normal schedule for a weekday. On Fridays and weekends, however, my schedule consists of fun trips and is never the same!
