A visit to the Botanical Garden
As mentioned in my earlier blog on the James Hutton Institute, there are places in Dundee that encourage plant enthusiasts.
One such place is the Botanic Garden, curated by the University of Dundee. This place is not too far from the City Centre and easily accessible via Xplore Dundee’s 5a Ninewells Bus (current frequency is ~ every 30 min).
It is near the Tay river, with a magnificent view offered during the trail. There are two greenhouses, a beautiful trial with a diverse set of plants from different regions across the globe and a fantastic cafe with the most scrumptious cakes to offer after a long hike.
This year, the garden is celebrating its 50th year! And luckily, I had an opportunity to visit it for an educational exploration.
During my visit, I started my journey in the greenhouses. Among the many beautiful regional representations available in it, the one that stood out was a centrepiece representing what plant life looked like on Gondwana – a supercontinent.
Apart from that, multiple different flowers will surely make you smile!
Another exciting piece I enjoyed along the trails outside the greenhouse was the Evolution of Genetics Gardens. A walk around this offers a unique perspective into the evolution of plant life on this plant.
The Botanical Garden offers many such gems. All you need to do is come and enjoy the tranquillity of this long story of evolution. And if you are a student at the University of Dundee, you get free entry.
