The start of” the third year” has been all-consuming for many of us, and now that we are halfway through, I am sure most of us have accepted and adapted according to the academic demands. And yet, in this juggling that we all are going through, I want to remind you to tap into your hobbies to feel refreshed and remotivated. We all must find a way of tapping into our energy sources through art, hikes, or whatever makes us feel happy, but to do that, we need to improve our time management ability. So here are the top five tips I learned from my friends (now that we are back on campus)/ through personal experience – for time management!
Don’t overestimate your working capacity – be realistic!
Although this seems like an obvious point, many times we feel that in a given period of three hours, for example, we can complete reading the extra bits and the notes for the topic but in actuality perhaps that works needs six hours (because you also need to process it properly before making any form of sensible notes!) So remember not to overestimate your working capacity and not underestimate the timeline!
Don’t try to eat an elephant (a hobby tip), and set a fixed amount of time during which not to work!
Some hobbies require you to spend a large block of time at a go while others are easier to portion – or do they? Sometimes we want to believe that this painting that I am trying to do will require a section to be worked on in a single sitting, for example – but the truth is that sub-categorizing a big chuck of the section can still allow you to progress with the hobby – just a morsel per day! So remember not to say I do not have the time to refresh/enjoy my hobby; do it in steps spread across the week!
Interact with people around you that seem to be driven and motivated!
The best way to find a good time management strategy for a specific module is to interact with people you see around you who have a drive! They might have a tip that might work for you, and sometimes their energy might motivate you too!
Don’t dive too deep!
Sometimes, some topics interest us and push us to try and find out more about them but set aside a different time block for that instead of adding it to your ongoing coursework – or else you might end up procrastinating for other modules!
And on that note of not going too deep, I hope these reminders (perhaps more than tips) for time management will give you some breathing time to enjoy your hobbies or just some “me time”! Thank you for reading! Best wishes for the rest of the semester!!
