Canada has always been a popular study destination for Indian Students due to its world-class education, renowned faculties, research facilities, and work opportunities. Around 5 lakhs study permits were issued in 2021. A further 65,200 study permits were issued in the first four months of 2022. As many as 3 Canadian universities are in Top 100 QS World University Rankings 2022 (University of Toronto:26th Rank, McGill University:27th Rank & University of British Columbia: Rank 46th). Canada is also emerging as one of the top educational destinations among English-speaking countries (USA,UK, Australia). Despite offering the highest quality of education, the cost for international students to study in Canada from India is also one among the lowest among top Study Abroad Countries. Types of Universities to Study in Canada from India

  • Public University: Tuition fees at Public universities in Canada are low since they are heavily subsidized by the government. The average fees start around CAD 5,000 per year and then goes to a higher range.
  • Private University: Private colleges charge higher tuition fees as compared to Public university (CAD 20,000-30,000) per year. You can manage higher tuition fees by taking a part-time job.

Cost of Living & Studying in Canada

  • Tuition Fees to Study in Canada- Tuition fees can vary from university to university depending on the course & duration. It can range from CAD 12000 – 30000 (INR 7 lakhs – 20 lakhs approx. for a student who wishes to Study in Canada from India) per annum depending on the course. Tuition fee is the core component that determines the overall costs. The tuition fee for courses such as Humanities & arts, education & others will be cheaper than expensive courses such as Engineering & medicine. For management post-graduate courses such as MBA, you’ve to spend a lot of bucks (CAD 30,000-45,000)
  • Living expenses- Living expenses vary from city to cities. However, students should allocate a budget of anywhere between CAD 12,000-15,000 (INR 7 lakhs to 9 lakhs) a year for his cost of living. In order to sustain the living expenses, a student can also work part-time while studying.
  • Accommodation costs- 
    • Student residences: 250-600 CAD/month
    • University-arranged homestay: 400 – 800 CAD/month

Share an apartment: 300 – 700 CAD/month

  • Extra costs associated with Accommodation
  • Basic utilities (Electricity, water, & garbage): 150 CAD/month
  • Internet: 50-80 CAD/month
  • Food Costs: Food bills will cost you around 300 CAD/month from local supermarkets/groceries shopping. Some of the cheapest supermarkets are Walmart, No Frills & Canadian Superstore. Eating out in a restaurant will set you back by 10-25 CAD.
  • Transportation Costs: Students, aged between 18 to 25, & enrolled in a Canadian university course will get discounts on monthly transport passes. Transport pass costs between 90 CAD/month.
  • Application Fees: Often forgotten by mostly students and their parents, while planning to Study Abroad in Canada. Each university or college charges an application fee from students in order to apply. Application fees vary from CAD 50 to 250 (INR 3000 to INR 15000 approx.) per application depending upon the university applied and type of course chosen. 
  • Entrance Tests Fees: Students have to appear for English proficiency tests such as TOEFL/IELTS, SAT for undergraduate level degree programs, & GRE/GMAT for graduate-level programs to Study in Canada. The cost of these tests varies from CAD 150 to 350 (INR 9000 to 21000 to Study in Canada from India).
  • Visa Fees: The cost of applying to obtain a study permit for Canada is CAD 150 (INR 9000 approx.). These documents have to be submitted during the visa application process:

    • Funds proof documents
