‘Engineering is for people who
want to solve problems.’ Engineering is the study of how things are designed
and work. A qualification in engineering is your ticket to an exhilarating
career, packed with adventure and exploration. Pursuing engineering may seem
overwhelming to study abroad, but in the end, the rewards are worth the effort,
as the benefits outweigh the challenges.

Engineering is an incredibly
broad subject, and no two programs will be the same. Let’s discover trending
niches in the field of engineering.

1. Aerospace Engineering

The study of Aerospace
Engineering includes the research, design, construction, and maintenance of an
aircraft.

Most Aerospace Engineering
degrees include the option of choosing selective modules suiting your
interests. Undergraduate programs usually last between three and five years,
and a Master’s lasts over one or two years. PhD degrees can take up to four
years to complete.

An Aerospace Engineer’s job
responsibilities include research, design, development, performance testing and
launching of commercial and military airplanes, weapon systems, space vehicles
and satellites.

2. Biomedical Engineering

Biomedical Engineering applies
the principles of science, engineering and medicine to the development and
advancement of a range of medical technologies.

At the undergraduate level,
BEng program usually lasts three years and MEng program combining a Bachelor’s
and Master’s degree is a four year course. PhD programs usually take around
five years to complete.

Biomedical engineers combine
engineering fundamentals with medical and biological sciences to design and
create equipment, devices, computer systems, and software used in healthcare.

3. Chemical Engineering

Chemical Engineering is the
science of converting raw materials into useful products, processes, or
technologies involving elements of chemistry, biology, engineering,
mathematics, economics, and physics.

Undergraduates can choose to
study a BEng program over three or four years, or (MEng) qualification over
four to five years. A PhD takes anywhere from four to seven years.

Job titles associated to
Chemical Engineering include Chemical Engineer, Manufacturing Engineer,
Petroleum Engineer, Plastics Engineer, Process Engineer, Safety
Engineer, etc.

4. Electrical Engineering

Electrical Engineering, also
referred to as Electronic Engineering, is concerned with the technology and
application of electricity.

Bachelor’s programs usually
last between three and five years, and an MSc takes one or two years. PhD
degrees can take up to four or five years.

Electrical engineers design,
develop, and test electrical devices and equipment, including communications
systems, power generators, motors and navigation systems, and electrical
systems for automobiles and aircraft.

5. Industrial Engineering

Industrial Engineering is a
broad branch of engineering that deals with improving processes and products.

Bachelor’s programs generally
last from three to five years, and a Master’s degree takes additional one or
two years. PhD takes around five years to complete.

Job titles associated to
Industrial Engineering include Business Process Engineer, Manufacturing
Engineer, Facilities Engineer, etc.

6. Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical Engineering is the
study of machines and includes their design, manufacture, analysis and
maintenance concerning with objects and systems in motion.

Undergraduate programs
typically last five years and can include a work placement year which gives you
real hands-on experience.

Mechanical engineers design,
manufacture, and evaluate devices like industrial machinery, heating, and
cooling systems, transportation systems, robotics, and tools.

7. Network Engineering

Network Engineering is a field
that blends engineering with computing and communications technology.

Bachelor’s degrees are usually
for three years (full-time), or four years (sandwich year). Master’s programs
last for one year (full-time) or two years (part-time).

Network engineers are
responsible for building and maintaining the day-to-day operations of computer
networks that companies and organizations count on.

8. Systems Engineering

Systems Engineering is an
interdisciplinary area of engineering that enables the building, analyzing, and
managing of a system.

Bachelor’s programs can last
between three and five years. Postgraduate programs are often offered over one
or two years.

Systems engineers are
responsible for designing and setting up an organization’s networked computing
infrastructure, ensuring that the system runs smoothly and efficiently, and
resolving any technical issues that may arise.

9. Technology Engineering

Technology Engineering refers
to the design, development, and implementation of technology in industrial
settings.

The course is usually studied
as a two-year associate degree. In case of a Bachelor’s degree, the program
tenure is three or four years. Master’s degrees normally take one or two years,
while research-based PhDs last for four to six years.

Engineering technologists
support the engineering team as they complete projects and also identify
problems, develop strategies, and perform quality control.

10. Mechatronics

Mechatronics is a
multidisciplinary subject that combines vivid areas including electrical,
software and mechanical engineering.

Undergraduate programs last
between three and five years, and a Postgraduate course takes one or two years.
Mechatronics engineers scrutinize existing processes and designs and make
recommendations for improvements and also develop new products and present
reports.
