Nestled in the heart of Costa Rica, between the lush rainforests and towering volcanoes is the beautiful town and biodiversity of La Fortuna. The expansive landscapes, vibrant culture, and immense adventure offer travelers in La Fortuna an unforgettable time.
At the center of La Fortuna lies the majestic Arenal Volcano which is an iconic feature of La Fortuna. This volcano is active, but its activity has significantly decreased since 2010. Standing at any point in the town, you can see the volcano, and the sight is breathtaking. The clouds swirl around the top of the volcano making it look like a perfectly-made soft serve. From hiking along its scenic trails to soaking in natural hot springs, the volcano offers various experiences for adventure as well as nature enthusiasts.
I did a zip-lining and water rappelling activity down cascading waterfalls which was so much fun to experience. It was about a 2–3-hour activity where we had tour guides helping us through each activity, but it is definitely a good idea for thrill seekers. We were surrounded by forests and bodies of water, all while jumping from one creek to another. It was one of the best activities I think I’ve done and would definitely recommend it to future travelers. After all the adventures, we were also provided with lunch to feed our empty stomachs.
Later in the day, we went on our way to the famous waterfall in La Fortuna. It takes a total of 500 steps down and the same way back up, but people of all ages can do the trek. The dark blue water and its cold refreshing feeling is a gem that I encourage everyone to check off your list.
The town’s charming atmosphere has restaurants to get some good eats, gelato spots for a little dessert, and clubs and bars to hang out in with friends after a fun day out. There are plenty of tourists, as well as locals who inhabit the streets until late into the night. It’s safe and easy to walk around at night with friends and have a good time.
On the last day, we went to El Salto Rope Swing, which has a little waterfall and a rope swing attached to a tree. You can swing over the body of water and dive into the pool of water below or simply sit and soak in the views. The rush of adrenaline in La Fortuna truly makes it an unforgettable experience.
